Alex’s Fat Ass 50
50K Run

January 3, 2010
Mt. Pleasant, SC

by
Alex Morton, Run Director

My friend Bernie said, “Nobody’s going to come if you don’t charge an entry fee!” I was curious and asked, “Why not?” He thought a moment and replied “People get scared when you don’t charge money. They think you might not show up, plus, they don’t get anything.”

The FA run starts at 6:30AM because I like to see the sun when I drive across the 2.5 mile Cooper River Bridge. This year we had cold (27F) and windy (15mph) weather …go figure wind chill!... but who wasn’t having some outrageous, cold stuff this New Year’s weekend?

Brian Fancher placed first with a time of 3:55:54, only having a few difficulties: avoiding waves on the beach because of a full moon, flood tide! Adrienne Small, also a local runner, was first woman and fifth overall. Most runners enjoyed the crystal, clear views and being on an uncrowded beach. A few runners dropped after disappointment in their results from the new book, “Ultrarunning in Five Days!”

The number of runners (about 25) who show up for this annual event has continued to be manageable, despite the long list of the run’s attributes: Some runners detest having to run in semi-tropical areas with large live oaks, palm trees, and green pines. The numerous old historic houses may seem like eyesores to some and only represent possibilities for new boutique malls. Having to run on the beach...sand in your shoes and between your toes! Plus, the views from the bridges…vertigo!

Fortunately, this small group of runners does not attract a lot of attention and none of the local authorities show up to ask what we are doing. Getting a permit on a major state highway going over five bridges and through four towns doesn’t seem like something that will readily happen in a state that just took down the confederate flag from the state capitol. The first year, I remember explaining to an officer who had stopped to ask me what I was doing, “It’s a Fat Ass Run.” The conversation only went down hill from there.

Hopefully, these low numbers will continue to be contained by lack of online registration and the fear generated by no race fee. Otherwise, the dreaded “wait list” will appear!
